HPV: A Widely Prevalent Threat to Global Health

Introduction

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infects millions of people worldwide every year. While most infections are transient and asymptomatic, persistent high-risk HPV infection poses a significant threat, particularly for women, immunocompromised individuals, and those without access to regular screening. Without early detection and prevention, HPV-related diseases may progress silently over years before clinical symptoms appear.

What Is HPV?

HPV is a group of more than 200 related viruses, making it one of the most common viral infections worldwide. HPV is primarily transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, most commonly during sexual activity. Most HPV infections cause no symptoms and are cleared naturally by the immune system within one to two years. Early screening and vaccination are essential tools for preventing HPV-related diseases and reducing long-term health risks.

Who Should Be Most Concerned?

• Women without regular cervical screening

• Individuals with persistent high-risk HPV infection

• People with multiple sexual partners
